Topics for conversational English: Struggles in everyday life

On the phone..

George: John, are you free this evening?

John: I don't think so but if you really want to talk about something important, I will make time for you.

George: It is okay John. I just need someone to talk to about my current problems. We can meet another day.

John: I could feel that you really need a company. Let us meet this evening bro. Can you propose a place?

George: You are very thoughtful bro. Thank you for your concerns. How about the cafe next to a lake where we we used to chat about life before when we were 19?

John: That would be great. How about 4 p.m.? Is that okay with you because this afternoon I have to fix something at home.

George: I don't mind as long as I can meet you. See you there at 4.

John: No problem bro.

At the cafe...

George: Thanks for coming bro.

John: That is what friends are for, right? How can I help you?

George: I actually want to further my study, but I am not sure if I can proceed with the plans due to some solid reasons.

John: Let us talk about the first reason first.

George: Financially, I am not prepared. In other words, I am scared that I might be not be able to find the balance between the budget that I have allocated for my study and the budget for my family.

John: Financial struggle can be a sensitive issue bro. The university might give you the proposed amount of budget that you have to prepare but sometimes there are extra things that you have to pay throughout the year. If you spend more than you have planned, financial struggle might lead to unnecessary stress which will negatively affect your motivation to continue your study.

George: If that is the case, I think I have to wait for another two or three years.

John: I believe you know better about your own financial status and I also believe that you know exactly when you should continue your study. How about the second reason?

George: I have no idea about the right topic that I should take to do my research proposal. There are so many things on my mind but I just don't how and where to start.

John: Do you still keep in touch with your ex-college-mates who might be able to help you with that?

George: Unfortunately I have lost all of my contacts.

John: Try Facebook then. I believe you could find some on Facebook.

George: That is a very good idea bro. You are a genius. I think I have found the best solutions. Thank you for listening.

John: No problem bro. No one is strong or wise forever. Everybody needs a second thought as long as we talk to the right one. Is there anything else that you want to say?

George: I think that is all for now. I feel better now. At least I could work on some options when I reach home later. I really appreciate your willingness to spend your precious time with me here bro. I really owe you.

John: I feel glad that I could share my thoughts with you but no matter how good my advice is, you must make the final decision. Do a self-reflection.  You will eventually find the best answer. I wish you luck.

George: Thank you bro. I will keep that in my mind.

John: I have got to go now bro. Please keep in touch. Don't keep your worries to yourself.

George: I will bro. See you soon.

John: See you when I see you.

SPM English paper 1: Section B: Describe an embarrassing experience in your life

Continuous writing

Free Essay Sample

Cover art

Sometimes, when we are in a desperate situation, we might make stupid mistakes because of our own clumsiness. In other words, this unnecessary carelessness might cause us to experience embarrassing moments in lives. The worst embarrassing moment that I have ever had was when I was in primary school. I believe most of us have experienced this and every time you think about it, you wish it had never happened. Sadly, it already happened and you have to live with this memory and sometimes this memory might come back to life when you come across somebody who experiences it or when your classmates talk about it.

I was a very hyperactive student when I was in primary school. No matter how many meals I took a day, the amount of food failed to satisfy my hunger. I believed I had a very high metabolism.

As a small kid, my classmates and I were easily influenced by rumors especially ghost stories. That day, a friend of mine told us that he saw a blurry dark figure walking into our toilet. He couldn't recognize who that dark figure was as he was too petrified to ask. He also claimed that the dark figure had never come out from the toilet. All of us were scared to death as we also heard a different version of that ghost story from the other students. Some even claimed that they saw a white entity flying into the toilet. Some kids were very talented in exaggerating stories. I tried to remain calm but the stories really had an effect on me emotionally.

The next day, I just enjoyed myself trying to forget the fear I had inside. I bought myself a heavy breakfast to bury the distress. An hour after the breakfast, I suddenly had a stomachache. It was not an ordinary pain as I farted a lot and I knew that I had to release it all at the toilet. All of a sudden, the ghost stories began to poison my mind. My imagination was greater than any movie directors as my mind was imprisoned by fear. I took a deep breath and I tried my best not to think of any thoughts of going to the toilet. I just sat on my chair thinking of something else to buy more time so that the school session would end as soon a possible as I really wanted to ease myself at my home sweet home.

As time went by, I realized that luck was not on my side. I could feel like I was sitting on a stone. When it was my turn to answer the question by the teacher, I remained silent until the cat went out of the bag when the teacher approached me like a prosecutor who was scrutinizing a criminal.

I couldn't find the right word to say but the stench was enough to tell everyone what was actually happening. The class broke into tears of non-stop laughter. I wish I had to power to be invisible.

My teacher quickly looked for my sister who was also studying at the same school. A few minutes later, my sister came with a smile which finally turned into an annoying laughter as she came closer to help me clean up my chair and myself. I was lucky because the school cooperative was willing to donate a new short pant because my short paint was heavily tainted.

At home, my sister quickly shared the hot news with everyone. I left the house as the heat was too much.

I was not worried about my family making fun of me but I knew that the next day at the school would be a circus because I knew everyone would be looking at me with a smile that would keep me isolated for quite some time.

I regretted not going to the toilet when the nature was calling but that embarrassing incident still makes me smile until today every time I think of it.
